Before you scan!

It’s important to get the photos as dry and clean as possible before scanning with PictureStudio.  We cannot guarantee any results but the quality will be best if you follow the steps below.

Saving water-damaged photographs can be a delicate process. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to do it:

1. Handle with Care

  • Wear gloves to prevent oils from your hands transferring onto the photos.
  • Gently separate photos that are stuck together, but don’t force them apart if they resist.
  • If photos are still wet, handle them carefully by the edges.

2. Rinse in Clean Water

  • If the photos have been exposed to dirty water (flood, sewage, etc.), rinse them gently in clean, cold water.
  • Do not rub the surface of the photograph.

3. Air-Drying

  • Lay photos flat on a clean, absorbent surface like paper towels or unprinted newspaper.
  • Keep the photos in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight to prevent fading or warping.
  • Change the absorbent material underneath regularly as the photos dry.

4. Separate Stuck Photos

  • If photos are stuck together and can’t be separated right away, place them in a container of cold, distilled water for up to 48 hours.
  • After soaking, try gently sliding them apart using a thin, smooth object like a butter knife or your fingers.

5. Freezing (If Needed)

  • If you can’t dry the photos immediately, or if there are many to deal with, you can freeze them.
  • Place the photos between sheets of wax paper and seal them in plastic bags before freezing.
  • Later, thaw them and follow the drying steps when you’re ready.

6. Avoid Heat or Direct Sunlight

  • Do not use hair dryers or heaters to speed up the drying process, as this can cause further damage.

7. Flattening

  • After the photos are dry, they may curl. You can try to flatten them by placing them under a heavy object, like a book, for several days.

8. Digitize

  • Once you’ve salvaged the photos, it’s a good idea to digitize them for safekeeping.

If the photographs are valuable or the damage is extensive, consider consulting a professional conservator for help.
